Cover Reveal: “Saratoga Letters”

September 8, 2016 by emcoop 8 Comments

I’ll not toy with your anticipation but rather, proudly share the cover for the soon-to-release, Saratoga Letters. But first, here is the back cover copy:

It is 1777. The Battle of Saratoga, a turning point of the Revolutionary War, encourages the American Continental Army with their first great victory. But there seemed little to celebrate for one patriotic woman forced to nurse wounded British soldiers right in their war camp. Thrust into deception by a cruel Loyalist uncle, Abigail is forced to lie in order to survive, all the while dealing with fears that challenge her faith. Danger stalks her everywhere, yet her salvation springs from an unexpected source.

Then…

Two hundred years later, on the anniversary of the Battle of Saratoga, thousands arrive from Europe and the United States to celebrate the event—including descendants from the war. One young American, Abby, meets another offspring of a British soldier. When her life is threatened, Abby turns to the only person she knows at the event—her British ally. Can she trust him with her life? Or will he betray her in the same way Loyalist spies betrayed her ancestors? Perhaps letters from long ago will reveal the truth.

So here is the cover for my newest novel releasing October 4!

Soon, I’ll share some pictures from the photo shoot done last fall. But I couldn’t wait to show you the final cover with the design from my publisher, Lighthouse Publishing of the Carolinas!

My Year of Living Sick

July 24, 2016 by emcoop 12 Comments

Many of you know about my recent health difficulties with a knee infection.

It all began in July of 2015 when I had a knee replacement. It seemed a simple enough procedure that is done by the thousands around the world. Unfortunately, I was in the 1% or less of people who develop an infection.

I knew I had a lot of pain during recovery and sessions of physical therapy. Somehow the signs of a slow growing infection were missed. It became VERY obvious ten months after the fact. I had to be sent to a SPECIAL specialist who removed my infected knee, inserted an antibiotic “spacer,” and sent me for six weeks on IV antibiotic infusions. I was allergic to the first drug, so they switched to another strong medicine that worked well, but not without some side effects.

My year of living sick led to anxiety and days of depression. It led to shedding 20 pounds—not that I wanted to hold onto them—due to my lack of appetite. It led to bouts of self-pity that the Lord coaxed me out of in His own amazing way. It also led to refocusing from my own pain and fears to focusing on others around me who had even greater health concerns than I did.

I also was blessed with amazing friends who encouraged me, sent over food, prayed for me, and faithfully drove me to my daily appointments at the hospital.

As an author, I had to keep up with my work: Edits, a photo shoot for the cover of “Legacy of Deer Run,” launching “Promise of Deer Run,” and preparing to launch “Saratoga Letters” in October. How I did all of this is beyond my comprehension. God was faithful.

So tomorrow I face my NEW, new knee surgery. I am hopeful and trusting the Lord that all will be well. I would so appreciate your prayers as I undergo this last (Lord willing) surgery on this one knee. And please know how much your prayers and encouragement have meant to me in this last 12 months—my year of living sick.

“Therefore, strengthen your feeble arms and weak knees. Make level paths for your feet, so that the lame may not be disabled, but rather healed.” Hebrews 12: 12-13 (NIV)

Fresh Voice of Author Kathy Nickerson

July 14, 2016 by emcoop 2 Comments

I’ve recently read not one but two books by author Kathy Nickerson. Although they are not historicals like I usually feature here,  I enjoyed her writing style so much that I wanted to share her books with you.

First, a quick glimpse about Kathy:

Kathy Nickerson is an author, speaker, and eternal optimist who has been living happily-ever-after with her country doctor husband for more than forty years. They are the parents of four children who grew up to become their best friends and who have given them fourteen grandchildren, so far. She writes about the struggles of life from a perspective of one who believes that all things will ultimately work together for good for those who love God.

Her latest novels are The Secret of Serendipity and Rose Hill Cottage. You can learn more about her writing and her reputation as an Eternal Optimist at her website. Sign up for her free newsletter and get a copy of Three Secrets to a Happy Life at www.kathynick.com

Here are my reviews of her latest two books:

Rose Hill Cottage is a novel as sweet and beguiling as its name. Author Kathy Nickerson has penned a memorable story of a novelist who decides to escape her grief by spending a summer at a cabin in Missouri. Her intent, she tells everyone, is to pen her next novel. But the truth is, she is reeling from the sudden death of her husband.

RoseHill 3D

This novel is filled with characters who make you smile and warm your heart. From the young woman who works at the local gas station/ Quick Mart, to the mysterious elderly woman who shares the cottage rental, these friends endeared themselves to this reader. An unexpected twist at the end left me hoping for a sequel to Rose Hill Cottage.

The Secret of Serendipity is a lovely, whimsical read! Aimed at middle readers yet thoroughly enjoyed by this adult reader, I wish I’d had a chance to read this book when I was 11 or so. But as life would have it, it was not yet written. 🙂 Lovable characters and many young readers will relate to moving to a new town and leaving a best friend behind like the main character of Kara Jane. Buy this book for a child, or for yourself. You will be sad when The Secret of Serendipty ends!

Books about the American Revolution

July 4, 2016 by emcoop Leave a Comment

Dear friends,

Forgive my infrequent posts! I have been recovering from one knee surgery and am facing one more surgery on the same knee the end of July. In the meantime, I will try to use this time of less pain to post more often.

Since today we are celebrating the 240th Anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, it seems an appropriate time to recommend my three books that that focus on the American Revolution. One of them is even being offered for free by my publisher!

The free one (on kindle) is Fields of the Fatherless, a novel based on a true incident from the first day of the American Revolution. Most folks know about the Battles of Lexington and Concord. Few know about the Battle of Menotomy which occurred the same day, and saw more casualties of war on both sides than any other battle that day.

To get it free just today, click here.

The three book Deer Run Saga begins in 1777 during the War of the Revolution. The first two books are already released. They are available on kindle for $4.99 each. All three books are also available in paperback.

Very soon, two novels will be added to my releases: Saratoga Letters (October 4) and Legacy of Deer Run (Book 3 of Deer Run Saga) (December).

Thank you, my readers,  for the many reviews you have posted. I treasure you all!

“Unbeaten” – Excerpt and Review

April 21, 2016 by emcoop 11 Comments

There’s a brand new devotional on the marketplace. Trust me—if you’ve ever been through a trial (that would be ALL of us), you need this Bible study. It’s called “Unbeaten” by Lindsey Bell. Author Bell takes the reader through the lives of real people in the Old and New Testaments and gives insights on how their lives can teach us how to overcome adversity with hope and growth in our walk with God.

Here is an excerpt:

When God Doesn’t Fix Your Problem

By Lindsey Bell

What if God doesn’t fix your problem?

Of course, I hope He does. I hope He heals your body, provides a spouse, grants you the child you long for, provides a job, or whatever it is you want Him to do. But what if He doesn’t? What if, for whatever reason, God chooses not to heal your body?

It’s one thing to trust God when He answers your prayers; it’s a whole different story to trust Him when He says no or doesn’t say a thing at all. Will you remain faithful even if your greatest fears come to pass?

This is the question Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego each had to answer.

If God didn’t save them, would they still follow Him?

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were taken captive by King Nebuchadnezzar. Their story is recorded in Daniel 3. King Nebuchadnezzar ordered the citizens of his kingdom to bow down to a golden image he had created. Anyone who refused would be thrown into a fiery furnace.

Most of the people living in Nebuchadnezzar’s kingdom obeyed. They didn’t want to face the rage of a man who was known for being hasty with his sword. Three men, however, refused to bow their faces to the ground in front of an idol. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego believed God could save them from the hands of Nebuchadnezzar and from the fire.

These men standing up to the king who held their lives in his hands is amazing in itself. Even more amazing, though, is that these men realized God might not save them — and were okay with that! Even if God does not save us, they said to the king, we will not serve your gods (Daniel 3:18).

Impressive faith, huh? Because of this bold proclamation, I expected God to save the men. If I had been He, I certainly would have. With a speech like that, these men deserved to avoid the heat. Apparently, though, God didn’t see it that way.

God didn’t prevent their fire, but saved through it instead. Isaiah 43:2 says…

“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.”

Nebuchadnezzar ordered the fire heated seven times hotter than usual. Then he had the three men bound and thrown in. The furnace was so hot it killed the soldiers. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, in contrast, weren’t harmed at all. The flames did not singe their hair, and the text says they didn’t even smell like smoke.

When Nebuchadnezzar saw the men walking around in the fire that killed his soldiers, he jumped to his feet and said, “Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods.” (Daniel 3:25)

God didn’t prevent Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego from being thrown into the fire. What He did instead was join them in it.

That might be what He does for us too. He might not prevent the fire, but He will join us in it.

He’ll walk with us on the hot coals and make sure not one hair on our heads gets singed. He’ll make sure when we leave the fire, there’s not even a smoke smell lingering on our clothes.

About Unbeaten:

Why does life have to be so hard?

Difficult times often leave Christians searching the Bible for answers to the most difficult questions — Does God hear me when I pray? Why isn’t He doing anything? Does He even care?

In Unbeaten, author Lindsey Bell shares the stories of biblical figures who went through tough times. Through this 10-week Bible study and devotional, she reminds readers that while life brings trials, faith brings victory. And when we rely on God for the strength to get us through, we can emerge Unbeaten.

About Lindsey Bell:

Lindsey Bell is the author of Unbeaten: How Biblical Heroes Rose Above Their Pain (and you can too). She’s also the author of the parenting devotional, Searching for Sanity. She’s a stay-at-home mother of two silly boys, a minister’s wife, an avid reader, and a lover of all things chocolate. Lindsey writes weekly at www.lindseymbell.com about faith, family, and learning to love the life she’s been given.

My Review:

I didn’t realize how much I could benefit from this devotional entitled “Unbeaten.” I think I’d gotten so used to the “punches” in this life that I forgot I wasn’t alone in the fighter’s ring. But author Lindsey Bell reminded me.

Bell systematically goes through the heroes and anti-heroes in the Bible who not only suffered in one way or another but either soared in their faith or succumbed to despair. The author doesn’t speak as one on the outside. She is very much in the ring of despair with those of us who have been wounded by life. She has allowed God to take her on a journey of learning to forgive and to see purpose in her pain. One can almost imagine God holding her arm high with each fight bravely won. Thank you, Lindsey Bell.
